Snack Smarter, Not Harder

We’re all trying to find ways to reduce the added sugars in our diet, so why not start by improving one of our favorites: snacks. Let’s stop feeling guilty every time we reach for a couple of cookies or a handful of chips, and find some fun, healthy alternatives. In this post, we’ll walk you through a few quick and easy ways to satiate that sweet or savory tooth of yours without all the unnecessary added sugars.

Fruits

Everyone likes at least ONE fruit… right? If we go for whatever is in season, we can find some yummy, natural sweetness. Whether you want to enjoy summer with a sliced mango or a handful of berries, there’s no wrong way to go about it. According to WebMD, mangoes and strawberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, K, potassium, and magnesium, making them a great way to up your nutrient intake. We’ve all heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but what if we told you there’s more to it than that. Despite being sweet, these fall favorites are actually a great way to reduce one's blood sugar. This is due to their high levels of chlorogenic and gallic acid, as well as quercetin, “all of which may help reduce blood sugar and protect against diabetes.” More than that, they’re a great on-the-go snack! Simply rinse and take a bite to find yourself in a crunchy, nutrient-rich paradise.

Veggies

Though not the first thing you think of when craving sugar, carrots have a natural sweetness that pairs well with savory dips. Aside from getting a high dose of vitamin A, they’re also full of calcium coming in at only 3 grams of sugar per serving. But, maybe you want something sugar free. If so, why not give celery sticks or cucumber slices a try? Full of magnesium, potassium, and good ‘ole vitamin C, they’re fun and easy snacks with minimal preparation. Try them with hummus, ranch dip, or even peanut butter. If you want to truly cut down on time, go for baby carrots: pre-cut and ready to eat.

But what about a crunch?

Hey, we get it, we’ve all been there. Healthy foods can be great flavor wise, but how will we ever replace the satisfying crack of a chip between our teeth. Fear not, for we have thought about this too. Play around with the texture of lentil chips. Coming in a variety of flavors, they carry their weight, literally; dips don’t stand a chance. With zero grams of sugar, lentil chips are not only a great source of fiber as a savory snack, but also contain a solid amount of protein.

If all else fails..
